Homi Bhabha

Homi Jehangir Bhabha, born on 30th October 1909, was an Indian nuclear physicist. Owing to his vast achievements in the Indian Scientific vertical he was called as the Father of the Indian nuclear programme.

He is also known as the founding director, and the professor of physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He was popularly known as the founding director of the Atomic Energy Establishment that is at present known as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

Homi Bhabha believed that STEM will change the future course of this nation and he believed that a change will only be possible if every student in the country is given stronger access to science subjects. For his efforts, Homi Bhabha was awarded the Adams Prize (1942) and Padma Bhushan (1954). He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1951 and 1953–1956.

Homi Bhabha’s contribution to the development and creation of atomic energy made him a significant figure in international scientific circles. He also served as President of the United Nations Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy and as President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics

Bhabha was also a painter, a botanist, and a classical music and opera enthusiast. His remarkable discoveries and contributions to physics didn’t mean that he wouldn’t set time aside for pursuing his innate hobbies and the interests he developed during the course of life.
