Augmented Realty Helps Redefine Learning Among Students

January 23, 2021 7 min read

When it comes to teaching, experts believe that learning a concept from a textbook does not effectively explain it or facilitate easy comprehension. For example, certain concepts are better understood through experiments, field trips, and 3D models, etc. The latest addition to this are AR (Augmented Reality) technologies that bring immersive and interactive experiences into the learning space to facilitate learning and knowledge retention.

Students have an immersive experience in the world of learning through technology. For example, studying about space and galaxies through AR will give you an exciting experience as if you are an astronomer closely looking at planets through a telescope.! It takes learning to a completely “different world” for students regardless of where they are in reality. This experience enables students to visit various planets one by one, followed by detailed information and trivia about them. Students find such learning processes more engaging, easy and their retention is significantly enhanced. When information has a fun element involved, the whole process gets better. Also, learning by doing, seeing and hearing helps in comprehending better.

Immersive experiences help children truly enjoy their education; keeping them engaged during the entire learning process . Practically is built on Edgar Dale’s ‘Cone of Learning’; we retain 10% of what we read, 50% of what we see and hear and increasingly more to 90% when we learn by doing.

Augmented reality (AR) is a top technological advancement which is trending in the education space and making learning experiences dynamic today. In recent years, we have been reading about AR in more niche technology applications, but in simple words, it means the following:

With AR the integration of digital information with the user's environment happens in real-time

With the new normal of COVID-induced School-from-home, technology is playing a major role in the education system as new tools are curated for efficient and better learning. More customised lessons can be made based on school, class, and student requirement. Various tech solutions have become sought after tools for education taking technology adoption ahead by several years. AR technology is used to render objects that are hard to imagine and turn them into 3D models, which makes it easier to grasp abstract and challenging concepts. This is especially helpful for visual learners. With this, practically anyone can translate theoretical material into a practical concept. Often students may find it difficult to understand concepts in zoology like the digestive system or functioning of the heart. This barrier can be tackled by using virtual anatomy lessons through AR experiences. Students can see the in the entire model of the digestive tract, complete with interactive components like intestines and their functioning.

Experiential learning through AR is an emerging trend where traditional learning merges with technology in a unique way that's fun, exciting and more immersive than any other form of education.

Technologies like this can bring out the true potential of students and imagine the range of things that could be achieved!
